The Pansy Shell, (also known as a Sand Dollar) got their name from their flat, round shape that is similar to a coin. In ancient times, some believed they were coins used by mermaids. In South Africa they are known as pansy shells because the five rounded shapes on their surface resembling the pansy flowers.
